My house is delayed yet again...

To forestall inquiries, due to a problem with the banks (why does anyone need to confirm availability of funds on a certified cheque?), the closing date of my house has been delayed to tomorrow.  Movers come on Thursday.

I will provide you all details about the forthcoming housewarming party in the New Year (don't hold your breath, I want to buy a sofa and some other things before holding the party).

Delays in my house...

So Dec. 15 has come (and almost gone), and I'm still not a homeowner.

The upgrades to the electrical service that were a condition of the deal haven't been fully met. Thankfully I learned that this would be the case a couple of days ago. The upgrade of the service from 60 amps to 100 amps relies upon Ottawa Hydro doing some stuff (running a thicker guage cable to the house), and that work has been scheduled for the 19th. So the deal will be delayed until the 20th.

This is more an annoyance than anything else. It looks like I'm going to be moving on the 21st, and then going to see the family on the 23rd, so I really stand no chance of being unpacked before Christmas. On the upside, it has drastically increased the chances of me being packed by the time that the move starts.

I still haven't really gone through the India photos yet. I'll try to do that when I've moved in.

My laptop just died...

So my laptop hard drive gave up the ghost on Saturday. Managed to rebuild, but lost a good chunk of data. Not a happy camper.

I've had the laptop for almost 3 years. I've clocked a lot of travel with it. It's been to New Orleans, clear across Canada numerous times, been thrown into soft sided bags to get dragged around, and it just made the trip to India with me. It's exterior has seen better days. It's processor was never great to begin with (it was designed for low power consumption, not high performance). It's built in pointing device (the little eraserhead stick thing) died about a year or so ago. I've often said that the laptop owes me nothing. I've got my money's worth out of it.

Having said that... What the damn thing owes me is the courtesy of not dying suddenly. With the house purchase on the horizon (just 8 days away), I don't have the money to buy a new laptop right now. I probably won't have it until the summer. If anyone knows who the patron saint of laptops is, please let me know. I'd really like to pray for his/her intervention.
