more movie ranting...
I saw Finding Neverland this week. Johnny Depp was great, but there's no great surprise there. I find 2 things shocking.
First, Finding Neverland has made the IMDB top 250. Hotel Rwanda hasn't, because not enough people have seen it.
Second, how the hell did Hotel Rwanda not get a nod for best picture while Finding Neverland did? It's not that I disliked Finding Neverland, it's just that I wonder why a movie so moving was left off to the side. I looked back, and Schindler's list ended up winning best picture, so it can't be the tough content.
Then again, maybe it is. Maybe people aren't seeing it, and we haven't had it nominated because it reminds us that we failed. It wasn't a previous generation that stood back and did nothing, it was us. Collectively. Romeo D'Allaire is right when he notes that collectively we should bear the guilt. Perhaps we want to put it off to the side because it is too real, too close, and we know that things like this are still happening, and we are chosing to stay on the sidelines.
I feel wretched. I hope others feel the same.
